Hi, I’m Joey, the trainer behind Dog and Yogi!

With years of experience training dogs and coaching their humans, both in-person and virtually, I’ve seen first-hand how reward-based training can transform relationships.
It’s not just about teaching skills; it’s about creating trust, confidence, and understanding between dogs and their owners.

I founded Dog and Yogi to make effective, science-backed dog training more accessible to those who really need it.
My Journey
With over a decade of experience in canine behaviour and animal rescue, a degree in Applied Canine Behaviour and Training, and nationally recognised accreditations, I specialise in science-backed, reward-based training that strengthens trust, improves communication, and deepens understanding between dogs and their owners.

From a young age, human and animal behaviour has always fascinated me. Even as a child, I had a deep interest in human body language and the subtle movements, adjustments in gaze and subliminal indicators.
For example, I fondly remember reading Alan Pease's 'Body Language' and his section about a meeting of international leaders. If you didn't know, I need to quickly point out that our understanding of 'appropriate social distance' when talking to someone tends to be associated with the social environment you are familiar with. Grown up in a busy city? You might feel more comfortable a little closer than someone from a more rural background.

As the leaders spoke, he focused on two in particular. As they did, one member frequently moved in to close the space and the other stepped away to return it to a distance more socially comfortable for them. When the camera footage was replayed and sped up, what resulted was a comical and gradual backwards movement around the outer ring of the meeting space by the two. No doubt without them even noticing!

If this all sounds a bit random and unrelated to dog training and behaviour - don't worry! In reality, it's just another of the many numerous tiny variables that can be taken into account when training humans and dogs. Nor is it a key or essential piece of information for trainers. However, if you found that interesting, then behaviour science may be for you, and those unusual rabbit holes often go extremely deep.

Behaviour Science; the how, the why and the incredible ways it connects animals and humans fascinates me. Whether it’s a playful puppy, a rescue dog adjusting to a new home, or a reactive dog learning to feel safe, behaviour is like a puzzle I never get tired of solving; because each piece helps owners better understand and connect with their dogs.
I love applying that knowledge to strengthen their bond and make training a rewarding experience for both.

Before becoming a trainer, I spent time volunteering in rescue, where I saw first hand the challenges that both dogs and their people face. That experience, along with navigating my own health struggles, reshaped my priorities and gave me a clear mission: to make a real difference in the lives of dogs and the humans who love them.

Every dog and every owner is unique, which is why I tailor my training to fit individual needs—whether that’s:

Helping a first-time puppy owner navigate the exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) early weeks with clear, practical guidance.
Supporting owners with behavioural challenges, from reactivity and anxiety to more complex issues—there’s always a way forward.
Providing expert training no matter where you are, with flexible virtual coaching designed to fit your lifestyle.
Offering patient, adapted training for older owners or those with mobility concerns, ensuring sessions are accessible and effective.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing the transformation—not just in a dog’s behaviour, but in an owner’s confidence. Training isn’t teaching tricks; it’s about building trust, mutual understanding, and a lifelong bond.

At Dog and Yogi, my mission is to offer professional, approachable, and empathetic support for every dog and owner I work with. Whether in-person or online, I’m here to make training a positive, stress-free experience that fits your life.
